Daniel Drewer is Europol’s Data Protection Officer and Head of Unit for the Data Protection Function, bringing extensive expertise in data protection and security within European law enforcement. He holds a Master of Law from the University of Hamburg and began his career as a contract lawyer for one of Europe’s largest integrated communications agencies. In 2003 he joined Europol, where he pioneered the Confidentiality Desk and served as Secretary to Europol’s Security Committee. Over the years, he took on increasing responsibility, eventually overseeing data protection and security compliance, reinforcing Europol’s commitment to safeguarding the fundamental right of data protection.
Appointed as Europol’s first Data Protection Officer in 2010, Daniel founded the Europol Data Protection Experts Network (EDEN), a community dedicated to addressing data protection challenges in law enforcement in the era of emerging technologies. He also co-founded the Data Protection Officer certification course at the European Institute for Public Administration (EIPA). Daniel is member of Europol’s AI Alignment Committee and the CEPOL Expert Group on Fundamental Rights.
